Notepad++ not starting - problem and solution

Notepad++ has suddenly stopped launching, e.g. although it shows in the Windows task manager, but no window appears.

Somebody has found it is caused by a recent dropbox update. The problem is in the Shell Explorer DLL of Dropbox which manages things like sync icons in Windows Explorer. Uninstalling Dropbox can fix this problem. But for most people, Dropbox is more important than Notepad++.

What I did to fix this problem is to disable Explorer plugin of Notepad++, e.g. just move Explorer.dll from Notepad++ plugins folder to its sub folder ‘disabled’. (Make sure you’ve killed all NPP++ processes before moving.

I’m sure NPP will release a fix soon.
